The Most Underrated Hair Essential You Need To Start Using Today
The most underrated/underused product that will allow you to go longer before needing a haircut or hair trim (when used frequently) located in your hair product bag. What product is it, you ask? It is "Leave-In Conditioners". The hair on your mid-length to ends is the oldest hair on your head, if your hair touches your shoulders, it is probably years old. The older hair is drier and weaker and does not get the nutrients from your scalp as your hair closest to your scalp does. Therefore, you need to add those nutrients to the ends of your hair shaft through either one of the 3 types of leave-in conditioners:
- Protein/Protective Leave-In Conditioner - Restores the lipid layer to your hair that chemicals remove. (For color/chemical-treated hair
- Bond-building/Strengthening Leave-In Conditioner - Repairs the hair from the internal bonds of the hair outward. (For hair damaged by Sun/hot tools/chemicals/color)
- Moisture/Hydrating Leave-in Conditioner, swells up the follicle with emollients and oils infused into the heavy cream. (For parched, dehydrated, dry, neglected)
IMPORTANT: Only after you have received a new and fresh hair cut or trim do these leave-in conditioners keep the ends of your follicles hydrated and sealed (preventing splits) which means, from this point you can go longer in between each hair cut, requiring fewer hair cuts in a years time. If you have not had a hair cut in a while and are experiencing split ends, these conditioners will do little for you because once your ends are split they need to be cut off. Now let's find the right leave-in for your hair.
For finer hair textures a light spray leave-in conditioner is recommended. For medium to thicker textures a cream consistency is recommended.
Leave-In Conditioners can be applied to wet or dry hair. If blowing out your hair, I recommend applying it twice, once when the hair is damp prior to blow drying, once your hair is dry (the conditioner you applied when it was wet, has dissipated in the steam, it has served its purpose, and is NO LONGER on your hair shaft). Now that the hair is dry and styled, we can add a thin protective coating on it. I promise you the mid-ends of your hair shaft will not revert, I do it many times a day for my clients and half the time they may not be aware that I am reapplying a leave-in conditioner to their ends for added protection. This is similar to adding a moisturizer to your face at the end of your skincare regimen. If you hair is curly/wavy, your leave-in conditioner can be applied to your ends after you diffuse your hair for shine and definition. Or you can apply to damp hair and let air dry.
Your hair does not need to be freshly shampooed to use a daily leave-in conditioner. It will not weigh down your hair. Remember you are only applying your leave-in conditioner to the mid-ends of your hair shaft. Separate your hair into 4 quadrant and apply your leave in you hands or spray on and then sandwich the dry hair in-between your hands and swipe downwards slowly. The added benefit is it can also help with detangling your tresses if needed. The same applies to our kids (our Princes and Princesses). If you use a serum or oil on your ends and find that it disappears, that is because our hair is porous (under a microscope it breathes through small holes on our hair shaft, When you add oil, the hair soaks it all up like a sponge. First, try applying a thin coating of your leave-in conditioner to your mid-end section of your hair (if you are spraying in - be sure to comb/brush through for even distribution). Secondly, add your light serum/oil. You will find by sealing up your porous strands with the leave-in conditioner, your serum/oil will last longer on your parched ends.
